Southway on the move with Hyster

southway people 2 a.JPGDurban-based freight-handling specialist the Southway Group has acquired its fourth Hyster reach stacker and seventh Hyster empty container handler from Barloworld Handling in response to increased demand for its services.

Established nine years ago, Southway has grown exponentially on the back of high service levels. Serving an array of coastal and inland clients, the group today operates full and empty container depots with a combined capacity of 5 000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) as well as a warehouse for palletised product and break bulk cargo at Isipingo Rail, Durban. To further meet client requirements, a container depot with a capacity of some 3 500 TEUs was opened in Kazerne, Johannesburg, last year.

Moving more than 5 000 containers per month at its Durban depots alone, uptime of materials handling equipment is critical to meeting Southways’ commitment to service excellence and growing its business, says Southway Group managing director Nan Govender.

Value is added through a long-term maintenance contract with Barloworld Handling, which places a specialist big lift truck technician on hand to ensure Southway’s big trucks are used to their fullest capacity, giving the company a good return on its investment.

“We know we can rely on outstanding parts availability and a technician response time of two to three hours,” says Govender. “When uptime is of the essence, backup becomes a real differentiator, and Barloworld Handling more than delivers. Based on our machines’ performance and reliability, and the excellent service we receive, we have long since standardised on Hyster.”

The two latest Hyster acquisitions are both fitted with 6m to 12m telescopic spreaders. The reach stacker, model RS45-31CH, is used to stack containers in three rows, stacking loads up to 43 ton five high in the first row, up to 31 ton four high in the second row and up to 16 ton three high in the third row. The empty container handler, an H12.00XM-12EC, stacks containers four high.
